In today's climate, where religious practice and organisation is rightly treated with great suspicion, words like 'asceticism', 'faith', 'prayer' and so on may bring to mind images of institutional-abuse, disengagement from concerns related to the planet, and unquestioned obedience to cult-dynamics. At the same time, there is an emerging trend which looks to the sustained attention of initiatory tradition as something which may offer clues to understanding ourselves and the world around us. The world of Shūgendō is one path to discovering how one wants to live in the world, open to anyone regardless of faith, gender, age and background. As a sect, there is no solicitation and no need to give up one's own beliefs. As a stage for practice, what is danced is up to you.
